He received this nickname because of his red hair.<\/p>\n<p>From the age of fourteen Jersey Red spent most <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">of his <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">time in the billiard room<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> in New York before moving to Houston in 1964.<br \/>\nAlthough he was a first-class straight pool player, his real strength was One Pocket, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">where<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> he could show his true talent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"result_box6\"><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">Jersey Red was known as a creative and entertaining person.<br \/>\nH<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">e knew to play pool <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">very well<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">but also to deal with words, and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">he <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">often commented on his game in his own One Pocket vocabulary. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\nUntil the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">19<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">60s professional <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">pool<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">did <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">not have a good reputation and has been associated with <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">school dropouts<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">vagabonds<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">There was no m<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">oney to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">be earned<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Jersey Red <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">spent many nights homeless on or under <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">billiard tables<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He played and won against all the big players like Willie Mosconi and Minnesota Fats.<br \/>\nJersey Red was the operator of the famous New York billiard room in which the film &#8220;The Hustler&#8221; was filmed in 1964.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">In 1992, he died of lung cancer in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jack Breit, born in New Jersey, is better known as Jersey Red.
